The Experience
Barafu Camp is a public campsite on the southern side of Kilimanjaro, at about 4,700 m in the alpine desert zone. It is the last camp before the summit for climbers on the Machame, Lemosho and Umbwe routes, reached after the traverse of the Southern Circuit. Climbers usually arrive in the afternoon, eat an early dinner, rest and set off for Uhuru Peak around midnight. The camp looks out to both Kibo and Mawenzi. Accommodation is in tents pitched by the climbing crew, with meals cooked by the operator's team, as on all of Kilimanjaro's camping routes.
