Africa's Last Eden

Safaris in Botswana

Botswana is Africa's great wilderness statement: the Okavango Delta's mokoro channels, Chobe's 120,000 elephants and the haunting salt pans of the Kalahari, protected by a deliberate low-volume, high-value tourism model. Here the crowds simply never arrive.

Climate

Dry winter (May to October) is peak safari season: warm days, cold nights and wildlife packed along the water. Summer rains (November to March) green the Kalahari and bring the zebra migration to the pans.

About Botswana

Botswana is Africa's great wilderness statement: the Okavango Delta's mokoro channels, Chobe's 120,000 elephants and the haunting salt pans of the Kalahari, protected by a deliberate low-volume, high-value tourism model. Here the crowds simply never arrive. Fly-in camps put you deep inside Moremi and the private concessions, where night drives and walking safaris are the norm. Pair it with Victoria Falls, an hour from Chobe, for the classic southern Africa finale.

Visas & entry

Many nationalities (UK, EU, US, Canada, Australia among them) enter visa-free for up to 90 days. Passports need six months' validity and blank pages. Confirm requirements for your nationality before travel.

Start planning

Low volume, high value, by design

Botswana made a deliberate policy choice decades ago: few visitors, high prices, enormous protected areas. The result is the most exclusive safari on the continent. Camps are small, most sit on private concessions rather than in national parks, and you can spend a morning without seeing another vehicle.

The Okavango Delta is the reason most people come, a river that never reaches the sea, spilling instead into the Kalahari and turning desert into a floodplain that draws wildlife from hundreds of kilometres away. Getting around is by light aircraft; a Botswana trip is a sequence of camps linked by short scenic flights, not a drive.

Be clear-eyed about cost: this is the most expensive safari destination in Africa, and there is no budget version of it. What you buy is exclusivity and water-based activities nowhere else offers.

Where to go in Botswana

A classic trip combines a water camp, a land camp and Chobe, usually three nights each, linked by light aircraft.

The Okavango Delta

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest inland delta on earth. Water camps offer mokoro, a dugout canoe poled through the reed channels at eye level with the water, plus boat trips and walking on the islands. Chief's Island in the Moremi Game Reserve at its heart carries the highest concentration of game in the Delta, including strong leopard and wild dog populations.

Chobe & the Linyanti

Chobe holds the densest elephant population in the world, dry-season afternoons on the Chobe River bring herds down to drink in the hundreds, and the river cruise at sunset is the single best-value activity in the country. The Savuti channel to the south is famous for large lion prides and an unusually visible predator dynamic.

The Kalahari & the pans

The Makgadikgadi and Nxai salt pans are among the largest on earth, a blinding white void in the dry season, and a wildlife oasis after the rains when zebra arrive in their thousands. Habituated meerkats, quad biking across the crust and sleeping out under a sky with no horizon are the draws. The Central Kalahari further south is Botswana's largest reserve and its emptiest.

Victoria Falls & Maun

Maun is the gateway, the light-aircraft hub every Delta trip flies from. Victoria Falls, just across the border in Zimbabwe or Zambia, is a 90-minute drive from Chobe and the natural bookend to a Botswana trip. Almost every itinerary starts or ends at one of the two.

Questions

Botswana questions

May to October is the dry season and the classic window: game concentrates at water, and the Delta flood paradoxically peaks around June to August, so water levels are highest exactly when the land is driest. December to April is green season: dramatic skies, newborn animals, superb birding, far lower rates, and some camps close.
