About Ross Carr’s Imbabazi Orphanage
Imbabazi, the homestead of American-born Rosamond Carr, sits among flower fields at Mugongo near Gisenyi. A friend of Dian Fossey, Carr farmed here for half a century before turning her home into an orphanage for children of the 1994 genocide, imbabazi means a mother's love. She is buried in her beloved gardens. Today the estate welcomes visitors to its flower farm, forest paths and moving family history: a gentle, hopeful stop between the volcanoes and Lake Kivu.
