Overview

12-Day Signature Great Migration Calving Photographic Safari

Every year the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and the Ndutu ecosystem host one of Africa's most important wildlife events. Huge numbers of wildebeest gather on the nutrient-rich plains, calves are born, mothers protect their young and predators follow the herds.

For photographers, simply being in Ndutu is not enough. Good wildlife photography needs time, patience, positioning and a guide who understands animal behaviour. This safari deliberately spends four nights in Ndutu and three in Central Serengeti instead of moving you every morning, so you can work a sighting properly rather than collect it.

A normal safari guest may be satisfied after watching a cheetah for ten minutes. A photographer may need an hour. We cap every vehicle at four photographers so each of you has practical access to the windows and the pop-up roof, room for equipment, and the freedom to stay with whatever is working.

Day by Day

Your Itinerary

Karibu Tanzania. After landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport you are met by a Gosheni Safaris representative and transferred privately to Gran Melia Arusha.

There is no safari activity today. Long international flights, camera equipment and a time-zone change are poor preparation for driving straight into the bush, so the first night is yours to rest, organise equipment and get ready.

Depending on your arrival time, our team will meet you for a safari briefing covering the route, current wildlife conditions, luggage arrangements, charging, and how the photographic game drives will run.

Photographic focus

Equipment preparation, arrival atmosphere, and optional hotel or garden photography.

Depending on arrival arrangements

Good to know

Recommended travel period is January to March, depending on rainfall and herd movement. The Great Migration does not follow a human calendar: rainfall and grazing decide where the herds concentrate. No responsible operator can guarantee an individual birth, hunt or sighting. What we do control is the right region, enough nights, an experienced guide, a private vehicle and sufficient time in the field.

Before you travel

For photographers

Vehicle policy

One to four photographers travel in one vehicle. Five to eight photographers means two vehicles, and nine to twelve means three. We do not seat more than four photographers per vehicle under the Signature label. A fifth and sixth body removes the window and pop-up roof access that the whole product depends on, and the short-term saving would come straight out of your photographs.

Optional photographic enhancements

Each of these is quoted separately and can be added when you confirm.

Private professional photography host
Technical coaching, image review and field instruction, best suited to specialist groups and photography clubs.
Exclusive vehicle upgrade
One or two photographers per vehicle, for maximum freedom of movement and equipment space.
Serengeti balloon safari
An aerial perspective over the plains, subject to operating area and availability.
Extra Serengeti night
More time in the field, and the single best add-on for a serious portfolio.
Private charter flight
For high-end parties or guests carrying substantial professional equipment.

Domestic flight luggage

The small aircraft operating between the Serengeti and Arusha have more restrictive luggage limits than international airlines. If you are carrying professional camera equipment, tell us before you travel so we can confirm the current carrier allowance and arrange extra baggage capacity where it is needed.

Recommended camera equipment

There is no compulsory setup. A useful kit is one or two camera bodies, a 100-400mm or similar telephoto zoom, a longer prime lens for serious wildlife work, a 24-70mm or equivalent for landscapes, spare batteries, memory cards, backup storage, cleaning equipment and a beanbag or other camera support. Beginners are equally welcome; what matters is the willingness to slow down and watch.

What the calving season can and cannot promise

During the southern migration period the wider Ndutu and southern Serengeti ecosystem can hold very large concentrations of wildebeest and zebra, which creates opportunities to photograph newborn animals, herd behaviour and predator activity. Rainfall and grazing conditions decide exactly where the herds sit in any given week, so no operator can guarantee a particular birth, hunt or animal. We guarantee the operational fundamentals instead: the right region, four nights in it, an experienced guide, a private vehicle and time.
