The day, step by step
Times are a guide. Your guide adjusts the day to the roads, the weather and how you want to spend it.
- 6:30 AM: pickup in Arusha
- Your Gosheni driver-guide meets you at your hotel. The early start matters because the day covers two separate areas. On the way the outskirts of Arusha give way to farms and villages below Kilimanjaro, and on a clear morning you may see the mountain itself.
- 9:00 AM: Materuni village
- Materuni is a Chagga village on the green slopes below Kilimanjaro. You meet your local guide for a short introduction to the village and the walk ahead. This is a lived-in farming landscape, nothing like a safari park.
- 9:15 AM: walk to Materuni Waterfalls
- The path runs through farmland and thick vegetation, and your guide explains the crops, plants and village life along the way. At the end is a tall waterfall dropping down the mountainside, with time to rest and take photos before the walk back.
- 11:30 AM: Chagga coffee experience
- Back in the village, your hosts show how coffee goes from bean to cup: roasting, grinding and brewing, usually with songs and plenty of conversation. You join in rather than just watch, then drink what you made.
- 12:30 PM: lunch
- A freshly cooked, simple Tanzanian lunch in the village, then goodbyes to your Materuni hosts.
- 1:30 PM: drive to Chemka
- The road drops from the green foothills into drier country on the way to Kikuletwa, better known as Chemka Hot Springs.
- 3:00 PM: swim and relax
- Chemka is a spring-fed pool of clear, warm water under shady trees. Swim, sit by the water or just rest after the morning's walking. Bring swimwear, a towel and a change of clothes.
- 5:00 PM: back to Arusha
- You leave for Arusha, arriving around 7 to 8 PM depending on traffic and how long you stayed at Chemka.
