Overview

12-Day Signature Great Migration River Crossing Photographic Safari

A Mara River crossing can last a few minutes. Waiting for one can take days. That is why this itinerary is built around time rather than promises. The Great Migration is wild, and no responsible operator can schedule a crossing on demand.

What we can control is the quality of the operation: the right region, enough nights in it, a private photographic vehicle, an experienced guide and the flexibility to react as the herds move.

The safari opens with a comfortable arrival night in Arusha, then flies you straight to Kogatende in Northern Serengeti. Four nights are given to the migration zone before you travel south for three nights of resident wildlife and big-cat photography in Central Serengeti, and finish with two nights at Ngorongoro including a full day inside the crater.

Day by Day

Your Itinerary

Karibu Tanzania. On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport a Gosheni Safaris representative meets you and transfers you privately to Gran Melia Arusha.

No safari activity is scheduled today. The first night is deliberately kept easy after an international journey, giving you time to rest, organise camera equipment and prepare for the bush flight in the morning.

Depending on your arrival time, the team will run a safari briefing covering the route, expected migration conditions, the photographic vehicle setup, domestic-flight luggage limits, and how the guiding team handles long photographic sightings.

Photographic focus

Equipment preparation, travel recovery and the safari briefing.

According to arrival arrangements

Good to know

Recommended travel period is July to October, subject to seasonal herd movement and rainfall. A Mara River crossing is a natural event that depends on rainfall, grazing, river conditions and animal behaviour. We never advertise a guaranteed crossing on a particular day. The promise we can keep is four nights in the correct region, experienced guides and the flexibility to respond to real conditions.

Before you travel

For photographers

Vehicle policy

One to four photographers travel in one vehicle. Five to eight photographers means two vehicles, and nine to twelve means three. We do not sell six photographers in one vehicle under the Signature label. The short-term saving would undermine the photographic promise, and it would show in the images.

Why this route works for photography

Fly straight into the migration zone
Flying Arusha to Kogatende means the safari begins in the key area instead of losing a full day to a road transfer.
Four nights on the river
Several mornings and afternoons to follow herd movement and return to the river sections that are actually producing.
Three nights in Central Serengeti
Diversifies the portfolio with resident lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants and classic Serengeti landscape.
Two nights at Ngorongoro
A final photographic environment completely unlike the open Serengeti plains.
A final night in Arusha
Time to back up files, repack equipment and rest before a long international flight.

Optional photographic enhancements

Each of these is quoted separately and can be added when you confirm.

Private professional photography host
Technical coaching, image review and field instruction for specialist groups.
Exclusive vehicle upgrade
One or two photographers per vehicle, for maximum freedom of movement and equipment space.
Serengeti balloon safari
An aerial perspective over the plains, subject to operating area, weather and availability.
Additional Northern Serengeti night
The best add-on for serious photographers who want more time around the migration.
Private charter flight
Useful for premium private parties or guests carrying substantial professional equipment.

The river crossing cannot be guaranteed

A Mara River crossing is a natural event. Herd movement depends on rainfall, grazing, river conditions and animal behaviour, and herds routinely approach a bank, hesitate, turn away and return hours later. We will never sell you a crossing on a given day. The commercial promise is stronger and more honest when it rests on four nights in the correct region, guides who know the river sections, and the freedom to stay in position.

Domestic flight luggage

The small aircraft serving Kogatende have stricter baggage limits than international airlines. If you are travelling with large camera bodies, long lenses, laptops or multiple hard cases, declare the equipment before arrival so we can confirm the current carrier allowance and arrange additional baggage capacity where it is required.

Recommended camera setup

One or two camera bodies, a 100-400mm or similar versatile wildlife zoom, a longer prime lens for specialist work, a 24-70mm or equivalent for landscapes and environmental images, spare batteries, memory cards and backup storage, a lens-cleaning kit and dust protection, and a beanbag or other camera support. Dust is a real consideration on the northern plains in the dry season.
