Overview

Arusha National Park Day Trip with Walking Safari

Arusha National Park is under an hour from town, which makes it the easiest full safari day in northern Tanzania. It is small but varied: mountain forest with black-and-white colobus monkeys, the green bowl of Ngurdoto Crater, the shallow Momella Lakes, and Mount Meru rising over the park.

The highlight is the walking safari. With an armed park ranger you leave the vehicle and walk for a couple of hours across open grassland, where giraffe, buffalo, zebra and warthog are common. On foot you notice tracks, birds and plants that you would drive straight past.

It is a good first or last day for a safari, or a day out for anyone with a spare day in Arusha.

Day by Day

L

Good to know

Walking safari: always led by an armed national park ranger, and only for guests aged 16 and over (park rule; younger children stay on the game drive). Wear closed shoes and neutral colours.

Wildlife: never guaranteed. Lions are not part of this park's wildlife; elephants are present but seen less often than in Tarangire.

Mount Meru: often in cloud by late morning, so the clearest views are usually early.

Essentials

The day, step by step

Times are a guide. Your guide adjusts the day to the roads, the weather and how you want to spend it.

7:30 AM: pickup in Arusha
Your guide collects you from your hotel. The park gate is less than an hour away.
Morning: game drive
Through the forest, where colobus monkeys feed in the trees, to the rim of Ngurdoto Crater, then out to the Momella Lakes. Flamingos gather on the lakes in some months.
Midday: picnic lunch
Lunch at one of the park's picnic sites, often with a view of Mount Meru.
Afternoon: walking safari
With an armed ranger you walk for about two hours across grassland and along forest edges. The ranger reads the tracks and keeps a safe distance from buffalo and other animals.
Late afternoon: back to Arusha
A short drive back to your hotel, usually by 5 or 6 PM.

What to bring

Bring a hat, sunscreen, a light jacket for the early start, binoculars if you have them, and a camera or phone. Wear neutral colours if you can. For the walk, closed walking shoes and long trousers are best.
