March is the safari insider's month. The long rains only truly arrive in the final weeks, so early March delivers green-season scenery, active predators around the lingering herds and some of the lowest lodge rates of the year, often with the parks nearly to yourself.

Storm cells build in the afternoons, creating the most dramatic skies of the season for photographers. Birding is exceptional, and gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda remains excellent. If you travel late in the month, favour the Serengeti's all-weather central circuit and pack for rain.
