Bwindi Impenetrable National Park earns every syllable of its name: 32,000 hectares of steep, ancient rainforest (over 25,000 years old) sheltering roughly half of all mountain gorillas left on earth. Trekking to one of its habituated families, through vine tangles and stinging nettles to a sudden clearing of feeding gorillas, is routinely called the greatest wildlife encounter there is. Four trailhead sectors (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo) offer treks from gentle to heroic, and Rushaga adds the four-hour Gorilla Habituation Experience. Birders come for 23 Albertine Rift endemics; everyone leaves changed.
