About Ndutu Area
The Ndutu area, straddling the southern Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, hosts the migration's most intimate chapter: calving season. From roughly December to March the herds mass on these short-grass plains, and in a three-week January to February peak around 8,000 wildebeest calves are born every day. Predators follow in numbers unmatched anywhere, cheetah hunting in the open, lion prides on the marsh edges, packs of hyena testing the nurseries. Because Ndutu lies in the Conservation Area rather than the park, off-road driving is permitted, letting photographers work the action at eye level.
